Ausencias
(Absences)

Cyanotype and Linocut ink on Hahnemühle watercolor paper
33 x 33 cm
Edition of 10 each

Ausencias is a series that explores the emotional landscape of loss and longing—the quiet, haunting sense of absence where presence was once expected. Each piece captures the tension between memory and hope: the expectant yearning for an arrival—and the silent void that remains in its place.

The imagery is based on old photographs found at flea markets—anonymous relics that carry forgotten stories. These photographs are manually altered during the creative process, imbuing each work with an intimate, reinterpreted dimension. Through these fragments of the past, the series evokes a collective sense of nostalgia and estrangement.

By merging the tactile quality of drawing with the visual language of photography, Ausencias investigates how color influences monochrome expression. The works are created using a combination of cyanotype and linocut ink on watercolor paper, uniting traditional techniques with contemporary reflection.

Ganz normal
(Completely normal)

2024
Installation. Central structure approx. 130 x 200 x 110 cm
Wood, acrylic lacquer, car tires, rope and bolts

At first glance, this work looks like a playground structure in the shape of a car. The structure is painted in the typical colors one might find in parks.

At the same time, the piece resembles the structure of a car that has been blown up. The associated car tires and car doors (made of wood) are scattered around the exhibition space.

Anyone who has grown up or lived in an environment where terrorist attacks or violence are common understands that life in public spaces comes with risks. It is therefore not always a given that one can sit peacefully and safely, for example, in a park. And yet, life must go on despite these limitations: one must still go to the market, to work, or to school. People avoid crowds, buses, or subway stations — but life continues “as normal.”

The artist grew up in Spain during the 1990s, a time when terrorist attacks were frequent across the country and special caution was required in public spaces (particularly for people in politics, civil servants, and their families). These experiences serve as the starting point for this work.

How white is this?

2024
131 x 131 cm
Acrylic paint and eggshells on wood

The work “How White is this?” addresses the ambiguity and subjectivity of ethnic definitions based on nationality.

The cultural context in which the artist was educated recognizes the Spanish population as predominantly white despite the country’s multi-ethnic history and their physical differences from other European populations.

This designation implies a statement of nationality and social status – European Vs. non-European – rather than a question of color or ethnicity. It implies, depending on the intention of the speaker, distancing oneself from people from countries bordering Spain or Spanish-speaking countries, with which the Spanish population shares origin.

How white is this?” is a kind reminder about these common features and a call to think about identity.

Reisfeld am Abend
(Rice Field at Dusk)

2023
100 x 100 cm, frame made from recycled stretcher bars
Acrylic, fabric, and needles on wood

Rice Field at Dusk connects the story of family migration with childhood memories.

Valencian folklore is dominated by “Las Fallas”, the Festival of Saint Joseph. People there invest large sums of money in their traditional attire in order to take part in parades and celebrations. Enormous artistic sculptures are erected in every neighborhood — months of work and considerable expense that are set on fire on the final day of the festivities. To some, this might appear as an act of excessive wastefulness.

In modest households, every old garment is turned into a rag or a pincushion. In this work, Jesús Gómez uses a typical fabric from traditional Valencian dresses to sew his pincushions. This suggests a kind of parallel opulence compared to the few pincushions made from scraps taken from his family home.

Rice cultivation has traditionally played an important role in Valencia’s agricultural economy. The turquoise cushions are set within an abstract representation of a rice field beneath a reddish-pink evening sky.

Reisfeld am Abend aus dem Rücksitz eines roten Renault 5
(Rice Field at Dusk from the Back Seat of a Red Renault 5)

2023
100 x 100 cm (2+1 a.p.), 50 x 50 cm (5+1 a.p.)
Fine art pigment print under acrylic glass

Rice Field at Dusk from the Back Seat of a Red Renault 5 depicts the dreamlike landscape of a rice field. The artist recalls the view from the back seat of a car, returning home tired and content from one of many family trips to the beach in the early 1990s. This work is an abstraction of “Rice Field at Dusk”, created through a close-up Polaroid of the original piece.

Bruchstellen
(Breaking points)

2023
each 9×11 cm, framed in 20×20 cm frame
Polaroid photographs (originals/unique)

This work is a derivative of the work “Sollbruchstellenverursacher”.

Through close-ups of the above-mentioned artwork, the Polaroid series is characterized as a study of light, shadow and color effects, which is decoupled from the conceptual weight of the original work and takes on a constructivist or abstract character.

Sollbruchstellenverursacher
(maker of predetermined breaking point)

2023
131 x 131 cm
Eggshells and acrylic on wood

Migration “breaks” through society creating new, beautiful landscapes.and new perspectives. This thesis discusses the influence of migration flows on social structures.

This work is called “Sollbruchstellenverursacher” (maker of predetermined breaking point), inspired on a German-made device engineered to perfectly cut the tips of boiled eggs. A name, which is almost unspeakable for foreigners.

In this painting, which is the base for correlated photographic artworks (Bruchstellen), German-Foreigner stereotypes flourish to start a discussion about the impact of migration on social structures.

FREE is an interactive project. The users of social media platforms are asked to state their own ideal of freedom. They should reflect and think of what makes them feel free.

I do create scenes inspired in the most interesting ideals of freedom shared with me. The pictures are therefore the result of a dialogue between the users who share their ideals and the artist, who reinterpret them in his work.

The cultural differences between a large city in southern Germany and a small town in the northern mountains are in some cases greater than these between two countries. The country is losing business, job opportunities and population. The weather, the people, the times and the customs change significantly after a few hours on the train from one city to another. The foggy mountains in this series represent the loneliness, isolation and insecurity that some people who are not accustomed to life in the country can feel.
